The 360° view from Hallgrímskirkja

When visiting Reykjavik, one of the most iconic landmarks you can’t miss is Hallgrímskirkja, the striking Lutheran church that towers above the city. Standing at 74.5 meters, it’s one of the tallest buildings in Iceland and offers a spectacular panoramic 360° view of Reykjavik and its surrounding landscapes. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, Hallgrímskirkja’s unique design was inspired by Iceland's volcanic basalt formations and glaciers.

The observation tower is one of the highlights of visiting Hallgrímskirkja. After ascending the church's elevator, you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking view that stretches across the city and beyond, offering the perfect vantage point to appreciate Reykjavik’s vibrant mix of colourful buildings, the blue waters of the Faxaflói Bay, and the surrounding mountains.

The view

From the top of Hallgrímskirkja, you can take in the full 360° view of the Icelandic capital, from the bustling city centre with its charming and colourful streets to the beautiful mountain range that surround Reykjavík. The colourful roofs create a picture-perfect scene, and the streets are laid out in a neat grid. On a clear day, you can see the sparkling waters of Faxaflói Bay, stretching out to the horizon. If you're lucky, you might even spot a few boats or ships sailing across.

Mount Esjan makes a perfect backdrop for the colourful houses of Reykjavík and the Faxaflói Bay, with its peaks often dusted with snow in the winter months. The mountain range provides a beautiful view from the church tower. From the tower, you can also spot the Perlan building, with its distinctive glass dome. On clear days, the snow-capped mountains of the Reykjanes Peninsula can be seen in the distance.

A Perfect Spot for Photographers

If you're a photographer, the 360° view from Hallgrímskirkja is a dream come true. Whether you're capturing the colourful rooftops of the city or the breathtaking natural landscapes that surround Reykjavik, there’s no shortage of stunning shots to be had. The tower offers a lot of space to move around and get different angles of the view, so don’t forget your camera!
