The History of Apotek Hotel
Architectural Vision: Guðjón Samúelsson's Legacy
Apotek Hótel, housed in one of Reykjavík's most cherished historic buildings, was originally known as the "Reykjavík Apothecary" or Reykjavíkur Apótek. Designed by the renowned state architect Guðjón Samúelsson in 1917, the building has long been an architectural gem in the city. Samúelsson, Iceland's most commissioned architect of his time, is celebrated for iconic works like Hallgrímskirkja and the National Theatre of Iceland.
Transformation and Preservation
In 2014, this five-story landmark was carefully renovated and transformed into a stylish four-star boutique hotel. The renovation preserved the building's historical character, blending it with modern comforts. Inside, guests are greeted by a striking mix of contemporary design and historical elements, including a grand spiral staircase illuminated by a modern lift and adorned with art by Guðmundur Einarsson from Miðdalur.
Prime Location: The Heart of Reykjavík’s Cultural District
Located in the heart of Reykjavík’s premier shopping, entertainment, and cultural district, Apotek Hótel offers guests easy access to attractions like the City Hall, Laugavegur shopping street, and a variety of restaurants and museums, making it an ideal choice for visitors seeking both comfort and a connection to the city's rich history.
