What to bring with you for your trip to Iceland

Packing appropriately is crucial to make the most of your Icelandic adventure. It can depend on which season you're going, and what activities you will be doing. We have compiled a list of essential things you will need for your trip to Iceland.

1. Layered clothing for unpredictable weather

Base layer

The foundation of staying warm in Iceland’s chilly climate starts with your base layers. Materials like merino wool are perfect for a base layer. The base layer will keep you warm and cozy

Outer Layers

A waterproof and windproof jacket is crucial. Iceland's weather can change rapidly, and you’ll likely encounter rain, wind, or even snow. A quality outer shell will help keep you dry.

Pants

Pack a combination of thermal leggings and waterproof pants. Thermal leggings provide warmth, while waterproof pants will protect you from rain and snow.

Hats, Gloves, and Scarves

Warm accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves are a must. Choose waterproof gloves and a warm hat that covers your ears. A scarf can provide additional warmth and protection from the wind.

2. Footwear for All Terrains

Hiking Boots

Hiking boots are a must if you are going to be exploring outside of the city. They are essential for exploring Iceland's rugged landscapes, including lava fields, glaciers, and uneven terrains.

Comfortable Shoes

Bring a pair of comfortable shoes for when you’re not hiking. They’re perfect for strolling around Reykjavik or driving between attractions.

Warm Socks

Pack several pairs of thermal socks to keep your feet warm and dry.

3. Essential Gadgets and Gear

Camera

Iceland’s landscapes are incredibly photogenic. Bring a good quality camera or phone to capture the stunning views. Don’t forget extra memory cards and batteries.

Tripod or selfie stick

Don’t forget to capture yourself in Iceland. Even though Iceland is very photogenic, it can be fun to capture memories with you in the frame. A tripod or selfie stick is perfect for taking photos with stunning backdrops without needing to ask strangers for help.

Power Bank

A power bank is essential for keeping your devices charged, especially if you’re using your phone for navigation or as a camera.

Travel Adapter

Iceland uses the European plug type. A universal travel adapter will ensure you can charge all your electronics.

4. Practical Items for Convenience

Backpack

A lightweight backpack is perfect for carrying your essentials during day trips. Look for one with multiple compartments and comfortable straps. This way you can bring snacks, gadgets, and everything you need for your adventures in Iceland.

Swimwear

Don’t miss the chance to relax in Iceland’s famous hot springs and geothermal pools. Swimwear is a must when going to Iceland! Especially if you want to take a dip in the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon.

Reusable Water Bottle

Iceland’s tap water is some of the purest in the world. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste. Plus, save some money on not buying bottled water!

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Despite the cold, Iceland can be surprisingly sunny, especially with the reflective surfaces of ice and snow. Protect your eyes with sunglasses and apply sunscreen to exposed skin to prevent sunburn. We recommend that you bring sunglasses and sunscreen for your trip to Iceland, especially if you are going to explore our glaciers.

Packing for Iceland requires a bit of planning, but with the right gear, you’ll be well prepared to enjoy all the natural wonders and adventures Iceland has to offer. Safe travels and enjoy your Iceland adventure!
